Gas ducted heating

Advantages

The most popular form of whole home heating throughout Melbourne. Gas ducted heating can be a very efficient way to warm every room of your home. When purchasing your unit, we recommend considering the high efficiency Brivis 6 star units, as the savings provided are enormous over the life of the unit. Unlike split systems, these units can run effectively regardless of how cold it gets outside. Assuming correctly sized ductwork, you can use your gas ducted heater with an add on cooling unit such as Brivis Ice refrigeration.

Disadvantages

Unlike a ducted split system, gas ducted heating cannot be offset by solar power.

Wall mounted split systems

Advantages

These are another popular type of heating unit, they are actually more efficient to run on heating than on cooling.

Purchase and installation costs are relatively low and they can also be used to cool your home in Summer. The term “split” refers to the unit effectively being split in half. The indoor unit gets mounted on one side of the wall and the outdoor unit gets mounted outside (within 20 metres of the indoor unit but the closer it is the cheaper the install costs). This means the noisy part, the compressor, is outside so the indoor unit is very quiet with only a slight fan noise. The systems available range from small units suitable for a small study right up to large units suitable for large open living areas (up to 100 square metres).

Disadvantages

Split systems need a defrost cycle when temperatures get close to or below zero degrees and they will not operate as normal during this time.

They are usually only suited to one room or area. If you want your whole home cooled, you will likely need one in the living area and one in each bedroom. It can therefore get expensive when multiple units are required.

Ducted split systems

Advantages

Ducted split systems can heat or cool a whole home at one time and are a more efficient option, when compared to having multiple wall mounted split units. One large compressor can cool your whole home. All the units we sell now are inverters, meaning they can increase and decrease the speed they’re running to match the required demand. As the whole home warms to a comfortable temperature, they will cycle down, thus reducing the running costs.

Disadvantages

The main disadvantage with ducted systems is their large initial installation costs. Supply and installation of ducted systems start from $8,000.

Ducted split systems need a defrost cycle when temperatures get close to or below zero degrees and they will not operate as normal during this time.

Hydronic Heating

Advantages

Hydronic heating is the ultimate type of heating for your home. It is the most efficient to run, the most comfortable type of heat and can comes in different forms, such as inslab/under floor heating, heated towel rails or the most common type; a wall mounted panel. There is no air being blown around, so it is comfortable inside, whilst being completely silent.

Disadvantages

Large initial outlay for installation and slower to warm than a gas ducted heater. The large investment doesn’t provide any cooling in summer.
